In this article, we will explore the role of geosynthetic materials in retaining structures and reinforced soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">To begin with, it is crucial to understand what reinforced flooring is. It is defined as a mass to which reinforcement elements, such as sheets, strips or layers, have been added for the purpose of increasing its shear strength. This reinforcement involves three fundamental considerations: the strength of the whole depends on the soil and the reinforcement elements, as well as the interaction between them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">There are two types of reinforced soil structures according to the slope of the face of the structure: retaining walls and slopes. Walls have a slope greater than 70 degrees, while slopes have a slope between the angle of repose of the soil and 70 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Reinforced soil is applied in various situations, such as the reduction of road fill, replacement of concrete structures, widening of road banks, and reconformation of slopes with natural gradients. These applications offer significant advantages, such as less area occupation, reduction in the use of materials, tolerance to differential settlements and better performance in seismic events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Geosynthetics play a crucial role in retaining structures and reinforced soil. The most commonly used are geogrids and woven geotextiles, with fundamental differences depending on their capacity to interact with the soil and the type of polymer from which they are manufactured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Synthetic polymers define their mechanical competence in terms of strength and elongation. The most commonly used polymers are high tenacity polyester and high density polyethylene for the manufacture of <a href=\"https:\/\/geomatrix.co\/en\/fortgrid-bx\/\">geogrids<\/a> uniaxial geotextiles, with advantages towards polyester for its high available strength based on its higher long-term mechanical stability (low creep). In the case of woven geotextiles, high tenacity polyester is used mainly because of its high available strength based on its greater long-term mechanical stability (low creep) and polypropylene to a lesser extent because of its high deformability under sustained long-term load (high creep).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The interaction between geosynthetics and soil is based on two main mechanisms: frictional reinforcement transfer and passive resistance. These mechanisms allow the geosynthetics to transfer their mechanical capacity to the soil, thus improving the stability of the containment structures, with greater efficiency in the geogrids due to their capacity for entrapment that achieves greater control of deformations, compared to the alternative with geotextiles that only offer a contribution by friction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">To evaluate the effectiveness of geosynthetics in reinforced soil, laboratory tests such as the pull-out test and the direct shear test are performed. These tests make it possible to measure the interaction capacity between the geosynthetics and the soil, as well as to determine their resistance and behavior under specific conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In summary, geosynthetic materials in retaining structures and reinforced soil play a fundamental role.
