In Corinto, Nicaragua, a fuel tank foundation reinforcement project was carried out using soil improvement techniques that guarantee structural stability and long-term operational safety.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1276\"><strong>Geotechnical challenges in fuel tank foundations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1561\">Subsurface conditions represented a major challenge for the design of the storage tank foundations. The low strength of the natural soil, combined with the presence of groundwater, demanded a <strong data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1545\">specialized engineering solution<\/strong> that would allow:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1768\">\n<li data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1609\">\n<p data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1609\">Increasing the carrying capacity of the land<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1649\">\n<p data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1649\">Reducing differential settlements<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1718\">\n<p data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1718\">Ensure the structural and operational stability of the tanks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1719\" data-end=\"1768\">\n<p data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1768\">Ensuring reliable long-term performance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1825\"><strong>Reinforcement solution for fuel tank foundations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"2085\">To improve the soil, a system was implemented to replace the natural material with stone aggregate, reinforced with interlayers of high modulus woven geotextile. <a href=\"https:\/\/geomatrix.co\/en\/fortex\/\">FORTEX<\/a>acting as reinforcement and confinement elements.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2483\">At the bottom of the excavation, a layer of 20 to 40 cm boulders was placed, compacted with heavy equipment to achieve adequate intrusion into the natural soil. Five 25 cm layers of selected granular material were placed on top of this base, each one reinforced with FORTEX BX1130 geotextile, which laterally wrapped the backfill to provide confinement and lateral stability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2678\">A layer of cement-stabilized granular material was built on top of the system to support the ring beam of the tank foundations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2678\">The implemented solution demonstrated that the <strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2150\">fuel tank foundations<\/strong> reinforced with high modulus geotextile is an efficient alternative for low bearing capacity soils.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2685\" data-end=\"2731\"><strong>Structural performance of reinforced fuel tank foundations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2733\" data-end=\"3009\">High-modulus woven geotextile layer arrangement <a href=\"https:\/\/geomatrix.co\/en\/fortex\/\">FORTEX<\/a>, The foundation pad, integrated with granular material, forms a foundation pad that behaves structurally as a footing with a larger effective area, on which the foundation beam of the structure rests.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3091\">Compared to an unreinforced material replacement, this system features:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3222\">\n<li data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3123\">\n<p data-start=\"3095\" data-end=\"3123\">Increased load capacity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3151\">\n<p data-start=\"3126\" data-end=\"3151\">Reduced deformations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3184\">\n<p data-start=\"3154\" data-end=\"3184\">Settlement reduction<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3185\" data-end=\"3222\">\n<p data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3222\">Better distribution of efforts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3224\" data-end=\"3623\">The tensile strength contribution of FORTEX geotextile increases the shear strength of the soil-fill assembly, decreases the deformation of the system and significantly improves the bearing capacity.
