However, their performance does not depend solely on their mechanical properties. Proper surface preparation, adhesion, overlaps, and placement of the asphalt mix are essential for the system to function properly.

During the construction process, errors may occur that affect the position, continuity, or adhesion of the geogrid. Identifying these errors allows for the implementation of controls and reduces the risk that a faulty installation will limit the solution’s expected performance. The most common errors are discussed below:

1. Install the geogrid on an uneven or contaminated surface

The surface on which the geogrid will be laid must be as even as possible and must be clean and dry. This is especially important when working on surfaces that have been milled, as they may have grooves or irregularities that are too large.

When irregularities prevent the geogrid from adhering completely, they must be corrected using the established rehabilitation procedures. If a leveling layer is required, the FORTGRID ASPHALT installation guide recommends a minimum thickness of 19 mm.

Dust particles resulting from milling and other contaminants must also be completely removed. Cracks and fissures wider than 3 mm must be treated and sealed beforehand.

What could happen?

The presence of dust, voids, or irregularities can prevent proper contact between the geogrid and the underlying surface, affecting the adhesion and interaction of the reinforcement with the pavement layers.

2. Incorrectly applying the binding solution

The bonding water is essential for ensuring adhesion between the existing surface and the geogrid. It must be applied evenly over the entire area, and the amount used must be determined based on the specific conditions of the project.

The FORTGRID ASPHALT guide recommends determining the appropriate amount through on-site adhesion testing. As a general guideline, it states that for existing asphalt surfaces, no less than 0.6 kg/m² of reclaimed asphalt should be used, and that on rough surfaces—such as those resulting from milling—between 0.8 and 1.0 kg/m² of reclaimed asphalt may be required. These values do not replace specific verification through testing, particularly when modified materials are used or conditions differ from those considered in the guide.

What could happen?

An insufficient amount or uneven distribution of the bonding agent can result in areas with poor adhesion and cause the geogrid to shift during subsequent activities.

3. Installing the geogrid at the wrong time

Once the bonding coat has been applied, the timing of installation must also be controlled. The geogrid must be laid as soon as the emulsion breaks down, in order to fully utilize the binder’s adhesion potential.

When using asphalt emulsions, the break time must be determined during the relevant tests. The guide specifies the emulsion’s color change from brown to black as a reference point.

What could happen?

Installation under conditions that do not meet the specified requirements may reduce the available bond strength at the interface and make it difficult to properly secure the geogrid.

4. Leaving wrinkles or creases while spreading the material

The geogrid must be laid out so that it remains aligned and free of wrinkles. While unrolling it, it is important to monitor both the position and the tension of the roll at the same time.

Wrinkles must be corrected before proceeding with subsequent activities. When necessary, cuts, overlaps, and mechanical fasteners may be used to restore the installation to proper condition.

What could happen?

A crumpled geogrid may lose contact with the surface, shift during placement of the mix, and result in an uneven distribution of the reinforcement.

5. Failing to follow overlap specifications or performing improper fastening

Continuity between rolls must be ensured by means of adequate overlaps. As a guideline for FORTGRID ASPHALT, the manual specifies a minimum of 10 cm for longitudinal joints and 15 cm for transverse joints.

Overlaps must be secured with mechanical fasteners to prevent displacement. At transverse joints, the end of one roll must overlap the beginning of the next roll to prevent the geogrid from lifting as the paver passes over it.

What could happen?

Insufficient or misaligned lap can cause a local discontinuity in the reinforcement and increase the risk of uplift during concrete placement.

6. Allow equipment to move directly across the geogrid

Once installed, the geogrid must not be exposed to traffic. Construction vehicles must drive slowly and avoid sudden braking, abrupt starts, and sharp turns. It is recommended to place a thin layer of asphalt mix over traffic areas to prevent direct contact between the tires of construction equipment and the geogrid.

If, due to construction conditions, the geogrid has been exposed to traffic, the condition of the bonding slurry and the adhesion must be rechecked. When necessary, the guidelines call for an additional application of bonding slurry.

What could happen?

Direct traffic can cause mechanical damage and displacement, wrinkling, or lifting that alter the intended position of the reinforcement before it is confined by the new asphalt layer.

7. Allowing inadequate overlay thicknesses or misaligned joints

The asphalt layer covering the geogrid must provide adequate confinement. For FORTGRID ASPHALT, the guide recommends a compacted mix thickness of between 5 and 8 cm, depending on the geogrid model, and specifies that the thickness must be at least three times the maximum aggregate size in the mix.

It also recommends avoiding alignment of the pavement joints with the geogrid joints, both longitudinally and transversely.

What could happen?

Improper joint placement or a surface layer that does not meet the required conditions can affect the interaction between the geogrid and the asphalt layer.

8. Attempting to correct a poor installation solely through compaction

Compacting the geogrid with a tire-type compactor can improve its adhesion and help keep it properly positioned. Additional mechanical fasteners may also be used when necessary.

However, these activities do not replace proper surface preparation or compensate for a substandard tack coat. The guide itself notes that compaction and mechanical fasteners do not make up for deficiencies in the quality or proportion of the asphalt used in the tack coat.

What could happen?

Attempting to correct a problem at a later stage that originated in surface preparation or adhesion may not fully resolve the interface defect.

Proper installation is part of the reinforcement system

A geogrid for asphalt layers should not be analyzed as an independent element. Its performance is related to the interaction between the existing surface, the binder spray, and the asphalt overlay.

For this reason, installation supervision must begin before the material is spread and continue until the new asphalt layer has been laid and compacted. The general sequence includes cleaning the surface, applying the tack coat, laying the geogrid, compacting or securing it, placing the mix, and compacting the new layer. In the case of FORTGRID ASPHALT, the guide also specifies as a quality control criterion that the geogrid must be fully adhered and free of wrinkles, with a tear strength greater than 5.0 kg/m² (See Photo 1).

Proper execution of each of these steps allows for the full utilization of the geogrid’s properties and reduces the risk that construction errors will interfere with the expected performance of the rehabilitation solution.

Therefore, rather than viewing the installation of a geogrid as an additional step in the placement of an asphalt layer, it should be understood as an integral part of the reinforcement system, whose performance depends as much on the properties of the geosynthetic as on the installation conditions and the asphalt mixture that make up the pavement.

Photograph 1. Field adhesion test to determine the amount of emulsion

Geogrids for asphalt layers are an excellent resource for pavement rehabilitation, as they reinforce the asphalt layers and prevent existing cracks from propagating.
