5 Tips to ensure the successful installation of FORTGRID ASPHALT geogrids for reinforcement and crack control of asphalt layers:

  1. Correct surface preparation: The geogrid must be placed completely tensioned and adhered to a uniform, clean and dry surface. For this reason, existing irregularities, especially on surfaces resulting from milling, should be corrected by covering them with a leveling layer of asphalt mix. If cracks and/or fissures larger than 3.0 mm in opening are found, they must be treated and sealed.
  2. Application of league irrigation: Once the surface is clean and dry, the application of an asphaltic irrigation should be made covering the entire surface homogeneously, for which it is recommended to use an asphalt irrigation equipment equipped with elements to measure and control the amount of asphalt applied.

  1. Adhesion testing of geogrid: The amount of bonding agent to be applied should be determined by the in-situ adhesion test. The test consists of cutting 3 pieces of 1.0 m2 geogrid pieces that will be installed on the surface of the pavement to be treated, after placing 3 different amounts of bonding irrigation. The geogrid pieces should be subjected to the passage of a tire compactor equipment to ensure its adherence. Subsequently, the pull-out resistance of the geogrid shall be measured, which shall be equal to or greater than 5.0 kg.

  2. Extension and fixation of the geogrid: The geogrid should be spread as soon as the asphalt emulsion breaks from the bonding watering, thus avoiding the loss of its adhesion potential. Paving may be done by hand. The transverse edge of the geogrid should be aligned and fixed to the road surface using mechanical fasteners.

  1. Geogrid compaction and overlaps: Longitudinal joints should be left with a 10 cm overlap. Transversal joints should have an overlap of 15 cm. Care should be taken to carefully impregnate all overlaps with asphalt and secure them with mechanical anchors to prevent displacement. Subsequently, the properly aligned and wrinkle-free geogrid should be subjected to the action of a tire compactor, adding water to avoid loosening of the bonding watering. The compaction operation should be carried out homogeneously, taking care of the geogrid surface.
