Importance and benefits of subgrade reinforcement with geotextile

To achieve an adequate improvement of the subgrade soil, three basic reinforcement mechanisms must be guaranteed in the geotextile. Below is a brief explanation of each of them.

  1. The stressed membrane effect. It consists of developing a tension at the base of the geotextile, guaranteeing an anchorage at its edges. This generates an upward reaction that counteracts the load requests on the subgrade.

  1. The control of efforts in the plane of the geotextile. Here the direction of the failure surface must be reoriented, no longer through the subgrade soil, but through the granular improvement material. This results in an increase in bearing capacity.

  1. The separation effect. This is to avoid the migration of fine particles from the subgrade soil to the granular layers, in order to maintain the effective thicknesses considered in the design.

Now, to guarantee the development of the aforementioned reinforcement mechanisms, the geotextile must have the minimum required properties, in order to ensure its mechanical and hydraulic performance.

In mechanical terms 

For this specific aspect, it is important to take into account the deformation modulus of the geotextile, the tensile strength and the available creep strength.

  • The modulus of deformation ensures the immediate response of the geotextile to the load request.

  • The resistance available per creep promises adequate control of plastic deformations in the long term.

In hydraulic terms

It is very important to ensure the dimensional stability of the apparent opening size of the geotextile, so that its hydraulic properties such as permeability, permittivity and flow rate are permanent over time, regardless of the stress state of the product.

In the market there are geotextiles made by flat weaving and geotextiles made by weft insertion, the latter being the most efficient option in these terms.

Integrating the above considerations, the following are achieved benefits with the geotextile: 

  1. Increase in the support capacity of the geotextile, due to the fact that it is generating a failure surface, through a material with better characteristics.
  1. More uniform distribution of stresses and deformations, which generate better mechanical behavior. This favors the durability of the structure.
  1. Greater long-term stability, given by the low creep of the material.
  1. You will achieve a more stable work platform and a better benefit-cost ratio during the construction phase of the project.

Finally, the mechanical contribution of the geotextile is quantified as an equivalent granular material thickness, which results in a decrease in the thickness of the granular layers of the pavement structure.
