Road rehabilitation of Victor Haya Avenue. El Callao, Peru
Avenida Haya de la Torre, located in the Constitutional Province of Callao, plays a strategic role in the urban road system, since it serves as an access and exit route for heavy cargo transport, especially to the port's warehouses and terminals. To address the deterioration of this road, it was considered the use of FORTGRID ASPHALT Geogridsan ideal solution for reinforcing highly demanding pavement structures. In turn, this avenue is connected to different main arteries such as the axes of Avenida La Paz and Avenida Venezuela. In this section, the road has a rigid pavement structure that has been subject to significant deterioration due to the high volume of vehicular traffic, the lack of periodic maintenance, the installation of the sewage system after the construction of the pavement and also the climatic conditions typical of the coastal area.

Therefore, a road rehabilitation project was proposed, focused on the structural and functional recovery of the roadway, in order to restore the service, safety and durability conditions required for this vital corridor. The project consisted of installing an asphalt overlay with a thickness varying between 9 and 10 cm over the existing pavement structure. However, it was necessary to ensure that expansion joints, construction joints and cracks due to the deterioration of the existing rigid pavement structure were not quickly reflected in the new wearing surface.
Solution:
Geogrids FORTGRID ASPHALT reinforces the bottom plane of the new asphalt overlay, allowing direct contact of the materials through their openings, thus structurally binding and reinforcing the asphalt layers. This effect redirects the shear stress path and distributes the stress over a larger mass of material, as shown in Figure 2.

Contribution of FORTGRID ASPHALT geogrids to prevent the propagation of discontinuities in asphalt layers.
Their higher resistance to cyclic loading and lower damage during installation allow significantly extended service life periods compared to fiberglass geogrids while retaining their mechanical competence until the end of service life. In addition, their balance between open area and strength offers a high shear strength at the interface, which ensures that the expected results are achieved.
They can be installed on any type of surface, as long as the adherence of the geogrid is guaranteed. For this purpose, the amount of bonding agent is determined by means of an in situ adhesion test, varying the amount of asphalt binder. Generally, in the case of fast-breaking asphalt emulsions, the breaking time and the optimum dosage is determined, which will be the one with a tear-off strength greater than or equal to 5.0 kg/m2 .2.
