Intelligent hydraulic protections with geosynthetics: Santa Lucia case - Magdalena River
The hydraulic protections with geosynthetics have become a strategic alternative to the growing threats associated with flooding, scour and fluvial erosion. These problems require engineering solutions that are reliable, fast to implement and technically proven.
In this context, geosynthetics made from high tenacity polyester are consolidated as key allies for hydraulic protection and bank stabilization, offering adequate structural performance, high durability and constructive efficiency.
This blog presents the case developed on the left margin of the Magdalena Riverin the township of Santa Lucía (Magangué, Bolívar)where the combined use of GEOCONTAINERS and TEXTILE FORMALETA ARTICULATED MATTRESS-ARTICULATED MATTRESS The project mitigated severe scour and flooding processes, protecting vulnerable communities and their environment.
The challenge: erosion, flooding and social risk
The town of Santa Lucía is located in a highly dynamic alluvial plain, influenced by the Magdalena River and multiple bodies of water. This geomorphological condition increases susceptibility to:
-
Recurrent flooding
-
Lateral channel scour
-
Progressive collapse of slopes composed of low cohesion sandy silts
The consequences were critical: loss of homes, damage to roads, collapse of roadsides and a high risk for more than 280 families. Faced with this scenario, it became indispensable to implement hydraulic protections with geosyntheticsThe project is capable of adapting to the fluvial dynamics and can be executed in a short time.

The solution: hydraulic protections with high-performance geosynthetics
The intervention strategy was based on geosynthetic systems designed to work with with the dynamics of the rivernot against it. The shore was protected by a gravity structure made up of an arrangement of geocontainers filled with material from the site, lined with concrete using the textile formaleta Articulated Mattress Pads.
This solution made it possible to integrate structural flexibility, hydraulic resistance and construction efficiency.
Geocontainers in high tenacity polyester
The GEOCONTAINERS made of high tenacity polyester geotextile were used as the main element for the rehabilitation of the shore. Its performance is based on:
-
High tensile, punching and tearing strength
-
Excellent performance in humid and aggressive environments
-
Ability to form stable structures by filling with local material
-
Geometric adaptability to differential settlements
The project implemented more than 2,000 units of GEOCONTENEDORESinstalled by tumbling, allowing an efficient execution even under complex hydraulic conditions.

Articulated textile formwork Mattress Pad: protection against hydraulic forces
To ensure the long-term stability of the geocontainers and to protect them from the tractive forces of the flow, a concrete lining was incorporated into the geocontainers using the textile formaleta ARTICULATED COLCHACRETO COLCHACRETO ARTICULADO.
This system offers key advantages:
-
Molded concrete with a river cobble-like macro texture that dissipates flow energy
-
Articulation to absorb deformations and dissipate hydraulic energy
-
High durability and low maintenance
-
Optimal integration with underlying geosynthetic solutions
In St. Lucia, the following were executed more than 10,000 m² of ARTICULATED COLCHACRETOThe result is a robust and technically reliable solution.

Results of hydraulic protections with geosynthetics
The project, with a completion time of approximately 9 monthsdemonstrated that the hydraulic protections with geosynthetics are not only technically feasible, but strategically superior to traditional rigid solutions.
Benefits achieved:
-
Effective scour mitigation
-
Protection of housing and infrastructure
-
Risk reduction for riparian communities
-
Optimization of construction time and costs

Why choose geosynthetics in hydraulic projects?
High tenacity polyester geosynthetics represent a smart investment because they offer:
-
Longer service life in harsh hydraulic environments
-
Structural flexibility in the face of morphological changes of the riverbed
-
Reduced environmental impact and use of local materials
-
Scalable solutions for small to large projects
The experience in Saint Lucia reaffirms that the combination of GEOCONTAINERS and TEXTILE MAT ARTICULATED COLCHACRETO is a reliable solution for erosion and flood control in high energy rivers.
Investing in this type of hydraulic protections with geosynthetics not only protects works, but also lives, territories and promotes sustainable development.
